Advent Reading
Advent is a season of joyous preparation for the Lord’s Nativity and a celebration of the coming of God as a saving event. For the early Christians, Advent meant the actual physical coming of Jesus the Christ among men. However, Advent is not only a past historical event, but also a current event in which Jesus comes into our hearts as we welcome and receive Him as God’s promised Savior. In Luke 2:8-11, Luke writes, “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” “As we light the third advent candle, let us remember to put our hope in the Lord. The third Sunday in Advent is the Sunday of Joy. We light the shepherds’ candle which represents the act of sharing Christ. Jesus Christ is God’s gift for all people. The third candle. reminds of the great light which surrounded the shepherds at the announcement of Jesus’ birth.”
